Multiplicity: Blackness in Contemporary American Collage
Frist Museum in Nashville, TN
September 15-December 31, 2023
The first major museum exhibition devoted to the subject, Multiplicity presents 75 major collage and collage-informed works that reflect the breadth and complexity of Black identity. Featuring an intergenerational group of artists, Multiplicity explores the varying ways collage is employed and how the technique suggests diverse conceptual concerns such as cultural hybridity, notions of beauty, gender fluidity, and historical memory. By assembling pieces of paper, photographs, fabric, and salvaged or repurposed materials, these artists create unified compositions that express the endless possibilities of Black-constructed narratives despite our fragmented society.
Artists range from established luminaries to emerging and mid-career figures, including Mark Bradford, Lauren Halsey, Rashid Johnson, Kerry James Marshall, Wangechi Mutu, Jamea Richmond-Edwards, Deborah Roberts, Tschabalala Self, Lorna Simpson, Devan Shimoyama, and Mickalene Thomas.
The exhibition will be accompanied by a catalogue with scholarly essays and will travel to two yet-to-be announced venues.

Fall Residency with the Foundation for Spirituality and the Arts
Foundation for Spirituality and the Arts (FSA) is pleased to announce our exciting lineup of programs for the fall. Beginning in September, FSA will host a lively residency hub in Charleston, South Carolina, with scholar Hassan Vawda along with artists Graeme Mortimer Evelyn and Lanecia A. Rouse. Hailing from London, Hassan Vawda currently serves as a Doctoral Researcher at Tate Modern and Goldsmiths, writing about the intersection of religion and secularism within British art museums, encompassing areas such as audience engagement, art history, and curatorial approaches. UK-based multimedia visual artist, musician, and curator Graeme Mortimer Evelyn works alongside artists and institutions to engage communities of faith with their sacred spaces, particularly for commissioning site-specific art and permanent installations. Richmond, VA based painter, photographer, and mixed-media collage artist Lanecia A. Rouse brings her studio and teaching practices to the Charleston residency, exploring embodied, spiritual, and psychological approaches that provide means of enduring, surviving, and thriving during experiences of liminal states. Each resident is planning for a contemplative time in the studio and various community engagements. Please refer to FSA's website for more information.
